It’s All About Money, Honey (Book Review)

Book: Honey, I Lost All Our Money!

Author: Anil Rego

Publication: CNBC TV 18

In today’s time, we believe in earning money (and a lot of it) and spending it (most of all) lavishly, unlike our parents’ generation which believed in saving for the rainy day. Most of us today are either unaware of various saving schemes and the tax benefits they provide or disinterested in pursuing it at early stages in life. When we eventually realize the importance of saving, we do so hastily by investing in schemes that we don’t understand. There is a lot of information on the internet with respect to saving money through debt and equity related instruments. Almost all the information are represented in a monotonous manner and evokes little interest among the readers.

In his book, ‘Honey, I lost all our Money!’, the author Anil Rego beautifully narrates the experience of the protagonist, Sunil’s escapades in the world of investments. Sunil, who thought he knew everything about saving and growing money, ran out of every rupee he had saved. Eventually learned from his mistakes and slowly rebuild his finances and ensure he retires early with a good money base. Finances and investments a rather boring topic, has been captured by the author in an interesting and engaging narrative to which the readers can relate to.

Instead of explaining each financial instrument point-by-point Anil has beautifully weaved it all into the story without making it too overpowering or boring to the readers. The internet today has pages and pages of information on investments, the right way to do it and what to avoid; however, it is difficult to get the customised information based on each person’s requirements or priorities.

The message of balancing the investments and not becoming over reliant on a single mode of investment is clearly evident in the book. Also, the fact that never invest in an instrument that you do not completely understand is highlighted. The book mentions some simple techniques to make his mantra of “Sit back, relax and make your money work for you," work effectively. This book is a must read not just for serious investors, but for the novice who do not know anything about investing at all.

I would rate this book 4 out of 5.
